Trump Celebrates New U.S. Pope in Warm Congratulations

President Donald Trump on Thursday congratulated Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost — a Chicago native — on being elected the new pope.

“Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope,” Trump said in a post to Truth Social.

“It is such an honor to realise that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”

Prevost, who will be known as Pope Leo XIV, was elected as the new pope by the Cardinals in a two-day conclave and will be the first American pontiff in history.
