Four Ghanaian Leaders Receive Gold Coin Minted in Honour of the Asante King

A significant feature of the Otumfuo Commemorative Gold Coin, following its launch in 2021, was the presentation of the coin to distinguished individuals and institutions.

Among the recipients were Otumfuo Osei Tutu II himself, as well as three former and sitting presidents of Ghana.

Upon receiving the gold coin, Otumfuo humbly remarked that he shared the honour with Asanteman and the entire nation.

After receiving the gold coin, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo noted that it was fitting for the King to be honoured through the minting of a gold coin in his name. He further expressed gratitude to Otumfuo for his instrumental role in helping to achieve lasting peace in Dagbon during his tenure as President.

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, reflecting on the same achievement, offered an even stronger tribute. He remarked that if Otumfuo’s role in resolving the Dagbon conflict had occurred in Europe or America, the Nobel Peace Prize would have been bestowed on him and the two other mediating monarchs.

Former President Kufuor also recalled that Otumfuo facilitated Ghana’s exit from the HIPC programme, leading to the cancellation of $4 billion in external debt.

Adding to these sentiments, President John Dramani Mahama highlighted another critical moment when Otumfuo’s intervention proved vital. He noted that the King helped secure the 2016 IMF bailout, which turned the economy around.

President Mahama further indicated that if anyone was to be celebrated in Ghana, no one could go past Otumfuo. “He has been a part of consolidating our democracy since the time of President Rawlings,” President Mahama said, adding, “Otumfuo gives good counsel at all times, especially during times of crisis.”
