Bawku in Turmoil: Two Policemen Murdered, Manhyia Holds Key to Peace

The attention of the nation will turn to the Manhyia Palace this week as Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II returns from his overseas trip to resume his mediation efforts in the Bawku conflict.

Tensions have escalated over the past two weeks, with reports of killings and arson attacks in Bawku and surrounding communities.

Mahama pins hopes on Otumfuo
Amid the unrest, President John Dramani Mahama indicated that the Asantehene’s peace process would resume soon.

Speaking at the Ghana Military Academy graduation ceremony on April 11, Mahama revealed that Otumfuo had assured him of his commitment to reconvene stakeholders upon his return. “We have activated the Otumfuo mediation process, which brought all stakeholders together in Kumasi to chart a roadmap for peace. The Asantehene has assured me that the dialogue will continue next week upon his return,” Mahama stated.

IGP’s visit fails to stem violence
Despite a recent visit by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to de-escalate tensions, the bloodshed has persisted. Since his departure, four people, including two policemen have been killed.

Mamprusi youth place trust in Otumfuo
Meanwhile, the Mamprusi youth have declared their willingness to abide by the Asantehene’s decisions, emphasizing that guns cannot resolve the Bawku conflict. “Every citizen of Bawku must lay down their weapons and listen to Otumfuo. Whatever decision he makes, we are ready to accept it. Politicians should stay out of this matter—we trust Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. Whether his ruling favours Mamprusis or Kusasis, let us all comply,” a youth leader asserted.
