Andre Ayew embraces challenge of top-level football at 35

Andre Ayew is relishing the challenge of playing at a high level despite being 35—an age at which many footballers retire.

The Ghana captain remains determined to continue competing and has been a valuable addition to Le Havre in France this season, scoring three goals in 14 appearances.

Ayew has made over 500 club appearances since making his professional debut in 2007 and holds the record for the most caps for Ghana, with 120 appearances and 20 goals.

“It makes you feel good,” Ayew told BBC Sport Africa. “There’s a lot of sacrifice involved in staying at the top level for this long.”

Those sacrifices include rigorous training and lifestyle adjustments, particularly in diet. Ayew acknowledged the increasing challenges that come with age, noting that maintaining peak performance requires even greater effort.

“As you grow older, you need to train more. It’s even harder to stop yourself from eating certain foods,” he said. “We Africans, especially, love good food, but at some point, you have to make a lot of sacrifices.”

Ayew rejoined Le Havre on October 4, 2024, signing a one-year deal after his contract had expired in the summer. His return followed an impressive six-month loan spell last season, during which he made a strong impact.
